The total area of Somali Region is 333,000 square kilometres with an estimated total population of 3,796,997(population and housing census 1996/97 G.C.). Of the total land in the region 80 percent is lowland and 86 percent of the total population lives in rural areas while only 14% are urban dwellers. Out of the total population living in the rural areas 46 and 54 per cent are pastoralists and agro-pastoralists respectively.
The region is known for its high livestock resource on which the livelihood of the population is based. Somali region covers the largest area where PCDP is being implemented. The total number of livestock in the region is estimated to be 23,641,000 out of which 9,053,000 are Sheep,8,547,000 are Goats, 3,796,000 are Cattle, 2,032,000 are Camels and 213,000 are Equine.
The average annual rainfall is between 380 and 600 mm while the average annual temperature ranges from 20 t0 45 degree centigrade.
